3 die as quake-damaged houses collapse
KATHMANDU, JUN 25 – Three persons died and three others were injured when earthquake -damaged houses collapsed in Sindhupalchok and Nuwakot districts on Wednesday. Both the incidents happened while locals were clearing the debris from the houses destroyed by the Great Earthquake on April 25 and its aftershocks.
Dambar Bahadur Neupane and Ganesh Bahadur Thapa were buried to death as a house collapsed at Kunchok-5 in Sindhupalchok, the district hit hardest by the April 25 earthquake . The incident occurred while the locals were pulling down the house. According to the locals, an aftershock of magnitude 4 also struck the area at a time when the house collapsed.
Bal Bahadur Neupane of the same villages sustained serious injuries in the incident. He was taken to Dhulikhel in Kavre for treatment.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Bishwa Adhikari said that the victims were sitting in a neighbouring house when the incident happened. “The houses that developed crakes during earthquake s can collapse any time in the rainy season. Such incidents can happen again in the district,” said Adhikari.
According to the District Disaster Rescue Committee, more than 90 percent of the houses were destroyed, leaving 3,531 people dead in Sindhupalchok.
In Nuwakot, a woman died while two others sustained serious injuries in a similar incident at Bidur-2. Police identified the deceased as Sangita Tamang of Gerkhu-7. Kiran Raj Kharel and Shreeram Budhathoki, who were injured in the incident, were referred to a hospital in Kathmandu for treatment.
The incident occurred while the victims were clearing the debris from a farm house that was partially damaged by the Great Quake.
