TAPLEJUNG, APR 14 – Post scribe Lawadev Dhungana, who is also chairperson of Panchthar district chapter of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ), has sustained serious injuries after being attacked by district sports officials on Sunday night.
According to Giriraj Baskota, secretary of FNJ’s Panchthar district chapter, a group led by Yogendra Sabden, chairperson of District Sports Development Committee and its member secretary Matrika Dahal manhandled Dhungana while he was with Balkrishna Kafle, secretary of the local peace committee.
Dhungana, who has sustained injuries to his head and various parts of his body, is currently receiving treatment at Neuro Hospital, Biratnagar.
According to Kafle, Sabden had threatened to kill Dhungana on the phone before storming into the hotel they were staying at to thrash him. Likewise, Baskota speculated that the group might have attacked him after
learning that he was investigating serious financial irregularities in the Sports Committee.
Police arrested Sabden, Dahal and one Chandra Tamang following the incident for investigation, but released them later in the evening after making them sign a declaration that they will be available whenever the police needs them to carryout investigation into the incident.
Meanwhile, FNJ district chapter and Nepal Press Union (NPU) have condemned the attack on journalist Dhungana.
In separate press releases issued on Monday, the FNJ and NPU have appealed for proper legal action against the guilty.
